The University of Cambridge must maintain its unique tradition of extra-curricular excellence if it is to retain its position amongst the world’s foremost educational institutions. Musical performance has long been at the heart of Cambridge’s global reputation. The continued support of student music-making is of paramount importance if, in an increasingly competitive international market, the university is to continue to attract the very best student applications and to produce the musical leaders of the future.
The proposed agreement with Kingsgate Community Church would severely limit the number of weekend performance slots available to university groups, causing a potentially critical drop in ticket income as well as clashes between concert-day rehearsals and students’ academic commitments.
We appreciate that reduced government funding and a fall-off in endowment income are placing additional pressure on departmental budgets, but we do not believe that measures which commercialise the university’s assets to the direct detriment of the its educational provision will prove a sustainable long-term solution to the challenges currently faced by the Faculty.
We urge you to oppose any proposal which would damage university music in this way.
