Anorexia nervosa is statistically the number one mental health killer. Every magazine cover, model, it girl and idolised celebrity is suggesting to young girls that this is beautiful. I myself have suffered with anorexia nervosa and bulimia, getting down to 5 stone and having a life threatening bmi of 12. 4. What teenager do you know that is aware that you are classified as anorexic and in danger of a heart attack below a bmi of 17? What teenager who is starving themself is aware this will lead to clinical depression, hair loss, being in a wheelchair, a section under the mental health act, no life and no friends? None! No teenagers are being educated about the dangers of eating disorders! The only information we give them is through the media and the harsh disapproval of the “obese” and the appraisal of the thin. Nobody is advertising the average uk size of a female in the UK is a size 16 and Its only a minority that are natural slender and thin. Sizes from thin to curvy should all be celebrated but not to the point of eating disorders and severe illness. Quite frankly I have had enough of no one talking about it or helping anyone when in m opinion EVERY GIrl has, at some point, felt the pressure to look a certain way! I’ve had countless messages, emails, texts from sufferers, family’s and friends and it’s a problem the government need to address. I think that Hugh schools need to start educating teenagers of the dangers of eating disorders, as I was unaware of these dangers until I was in hospital, 3 stone lighter on my death bed and I think that’s abit late!! I propose, that high schools should have a compulsory lesson/morning that educates high school students, male and female, about the damage a paradigm of eating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder etc carry. I feel it would be best to present someone who has overcome one of the named illnesses aswell as local child’s health organisations such as kAMS who can present the statistical and factful information to students. Please sign this petition as every young girl and boy will at some point strive or feel pressure to be thinner and skinny and I don’t like the thought of anyone having to go through what I have when there is something that can be done to prevent it. I will be taking this to the local MP and I would appreciate the backing of as many people as possible. Thankyou, Danielle x
